City planners and civic officials like to crow about all the things they do to make our cities better places. They trumpet things like streets and policemen, and those are good things, but what about a place to Automatic parking disc cars trash? Sometimes it’s the things planners overlook like parking disc benches, parking spots, and trash receptacles that would really make a positive difference in the lives of citizens.

Some smart city planner needs to realize that people need to travel in more than one direction in cities. Why is it that there are so many one-way streets in major cities now? There’s probably some grand scientific explanation for it, but it’s still a pain in the backside. When I visit a city with too many one-way streets I pick the first one that goes out of town and stay on it.

Speaking of streets, what ever happened to free curbside parking disc? Actually meter parking would be better than no parking at all. Nothing is worse than a town with a great downtown restaurant/shopping district with no parking. I could understand this if the streets were narrow or if the city had a robust transit system, but if you expect people to drive to your shopping district shouldn’t you give them a place to Automatic parking disc?

If you get your car parked, and then shop until you’re ready to drop there’s a good chance there won’t be a place to drop, or at least one that’s comfortable. Public benches used to be mainstays in downtown areas. They were spots for people to take a rest or maybe sit and visit with a friend. Some towns even arranged these benches together with shade trees and checkerboards to give men something to do while the ladies shopped. Do city planners think we don’t need to rest anymore? Plus, they can’t be that costly because they’re great places to put some advertising. This seems like something easy that planners could do that would certainly benefit citizens especially those poor souls tired from a long hike to shop after parking the car a half-mile away.

Something else that’s in short supply in urban areas is trash receptacles. There are certainly plenty of places that sell burgers, coffee, cookies and other items that come in paper wrappers, but it’s a chore to find a place to drop the wrapper when you’re done. What makes it worse is the fact that there are always signs telling us to put litter in its place. Just where is that place, our pockets or the gutter because there’s never a trash can around when you have a nice, greasy burger wrapper that you need to throw away.

I could get over all the other shortfalls of some cities if they just had a good library. Most small towns have nice libraries, so why is it the big spots on the map seldom have one worth its salt? Nothing is more frustrating than going to a library in a strange town and not being able to find even one newspaper from out of state. Even worse are the libraries that seem to cater to children and academic readers. Some of us like to read Stephen King novels and toss and turn in our hotel rooms overnight. That is if they’ll let an out of town person even take a book out of the library in the first place. Maybe cities need a dose of trust too.

Attention, city planners, the masses have spoken, or at least I have. If you want me to move to your town forget sports stadiums and industrial parking disc. Give me a good library to find a book and some Automatic parking disc benches to sit on and enjoy it with a cup of coffee. Oh, and a trash can would be handy when I’m through with that coffee.
